Herschel uppt\u00e4ckte planeten, som han fr\u00e5n b\u00f6rjan trodde var en komet, sen de stora m\u00e5narna Titan och Oberon &#8211; och s\u00e5 ringarna???<\/p>\n<p>Ringarna &#8220;uppt\u00e4cktes&#8221; definitivt 1977 genom en ockultation av en stj\u00e4rna\u00a0 och anses i dag vara minst dussinet+ m\u00e5nga. Faktum \u00e4r att Herschel var n\u00e5got p\u00e5 sp\u00e5ren, men han var s\u00e5 sj\u00e4lvkritisk att han avskrev de tio \u00e5r l\u00e5nga observationerna av Uranus-&#8220;ringarna&#8221; 1782-1792. Ett tag tyckte han sig se tv\u00e5 ringar som stod i 90-gradiga vinklar mot varandra runt planeten &#8211; ringar med olika l\u00e4ngd.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Grant<\/strong> omtalar observationerna i sin klassiker\u00a0 <em>History of physical astronomy <\/em>(1852) och beskriver observationerna i termer av &#8220;illusory&#8221; och &#8220;unfounded&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Det \u00e4r fullt m\u00f6jligt att Herschel inte s\u00e5g n\u00e5gra ringar alls men bara det faktum att han v\u00e5gade antyda ett ringsystem \u00e4r ju ganska s\u00e5 anm\u00e4rkningsv\u00e4rt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Stj\u00e4rnan som ockulterades 1977 har katalogbeteckningen SAO 158687\u00a0 och\u00a0 f\u00f6rm\u00f6rkelsen noterades dels av Kuiper Airborne Observatory, dels\u00a0 av Perth Observatory i Australien. En som tror p\u00e5 Herschel \u00e4r definitivt britten, satellitforskaren <strong>Stuart Eves<\/strong>, som h\u00e4rom \u00e5ret menade att Herschel kan ha sett planetens s\u00e5 kallade Epsilon-ring.
