Vinkelstorleken f\u00f6r Melotte 111 anges p\u00e5 vissa h\u00e5ll till 275 b\u00e5gminuter (cirka 4-5 kvadratgrader), och stj\u00e4rnhopen med kanske 100 stj\u00e4rnor och de ljusstarkaste runt 5:e magnituden har formen av en triangel. F\u00e5 stj\u00e4rnor under magn 10 har identifierats i hopen.\u00a0 Stj\u00e4rnorna ligger p\u00e5 280-290 ljus\u00e5rs avst\u00e5nd.<\/p>\n<p>Plejaderna och Hyaderna k\u00e4nner vi till sen urminnes tider, Men f\u00f6rst 1938 lyckades astronomen\u00a0 <strong>R J Trumpler<\/strong> konstatera att\u00a0 37 stj\u00e4rnor h\u00e4r utgjorde en verklig, sammanh\u00e4ngande \u00f6ppen stj\u00e4rnhop &#8211;<strong> P J Melotte<\/strong> hade redan 1915 tagit upp dem i sin \u00f6ppna stj\u00e4rnhops-katalog som nr 111.<\/p>\n<p>Om jag bar f\u00f6rst\u00e5tt signalerna r\u00e4tt s\u00e5 r\u00f6r sig stj\u00e4rnorna n\u00e4rmast parallellt med solen i Vintergatan, vilket bevisas alternativ understryks av egenr\u00f6relsen p\u00e5 0,02 b\u00e5gsekunder\/\u00e5r och fr\u00e5nvaron av Doppler-effekt i stj\u00e4rnornas spektra.<\/p>\n<p>Stj\u00e4rnhopen \u00e4r den n\u00e4rmaste oss j\u00e4mte Hyaderna och hopen i Ursa Major\/Stora bj\u00f6rnen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c5lder?
