Bilden togs av dr Stuart 15 nov 1953 kl 01.00 UT.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Flare200a-300x235.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Flare200a-300x235.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Flare200a.gif 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>En 20-30 m stor asteroid br\u00e4nde in p\u00e5 m\u00e5nytan och skapade en krater p\u00e5 1-2 km.<\/p>\n<p>Den fotografiska observationen p\u00e5 8 sekunder fr\u00e5n dr Stuarts sida &#8211; han lever inte l\u00e4ngre; sonen <strong>Jerry Stuart <\/strong>f\u00f6rekommer ofta i debatten\u00a0 &#8211; har diskuterats fram- och bakl\u00e4nges, men den har aldrig egentligen avf\u00e4rdats som om\u00f6jlig eller orimlig. Annars brukar alltid amat\u00f6rastronomer f\u00e5 s\u00e5n skit p\u00e5 sig.<\/p>\n<p>1994 s\u00e5g det kortlivade Clementine-projektets NASA-uts\u00e4nda m\u00e5nsond en krater i Stuarts-storleken p\u00e5 den misst\u00e4nkta platsen, en krater som onekligen ser v\u00e4ldigt ny, fin och frisk ut.<\/p>\n<p>Forskare som <a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2003Icar..161..192B\">JPL:s <strong>Bonnie J Buratti et al <\/strong>utredde fenomenet s\u00e5 l\u00e5ngt det gick f\u00f6r en sju-\u00e5tta \u00e5r sen <\/a>och f\u00f6rnekar inte m\u00f6jligheten av en n\u00e4stan dagsf\u00e4rsk m\u00e5nkrater. Deras ber\u00e4kning av l\u00e4get, krockenergi, kraterns och krateromr\u00e5dets utseende i dag m m passade som pusselbitar in i Stuarts historiska observation.<\/p>\n<p>Det jag saknar \u00e4r dagsaktuella bilder fr\u00e5n alla sonder som snurrar runt m\u00e5nen. Var h\u00e5ller de hus? Hur ser en close-up ut? IAU &#8220;l\u00e4gger sig inte i&#8221;\u00a0 medlemsl\u00e4nders inreastronomiska angel\u00e4genheter men ans\u00e5g sig \u00e4nd\u00e5 kunna h\u00e5lla med b\u00e5de American Astronomical Society, Canadian Astronomical Society och v\u00e5r egen kontinents\u00a0 European Astronomical Society i dess kamp f\u00f6r JWST.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/AAS-logo1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-19979\" src=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/AAS-logo1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Citat fr\u00e5n IAU-uttalandet:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It is widely accepted that the Hubble Space Telescope<\/strong> and its discoveries have transformed astronomy and had enormous worldwide impact on the public appreciation of science. The JWST, as the proposed successor to the Hubble, has capabilities surpassing those of the Hubble and will enable astronomers worldwide to address the most pressing questions in modern astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New technological advances by the JWST<\/strong> will enable fundamental discoveries of planets around other stars and the formation of the first structure in the early universe, topics of enormous public interest.\u00a0 It is seen by the astronomical community as a cornerstone of humanity\u2019s exploration of the cosmos for the coming decades, and its importance to science cannot be overstated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/canadian-astronomical-society1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-19986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/canadian-astronomical-society1-150x127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The IAU fully appreciates the <\/strong>current difficult economic times that now confront the world.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the IAU strongly supports the completion of this vitally important international project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ett alldeles lagom uttalande f\u00f6r att komma fr\u00e5n det h\u00e5llet!<\/p>\n<p>H\u00e4r finns <a href=\"http:\/\/aas.org\/node\/4483\">AAS-uttalandet <\/a>och h\u00e4r <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.casca.ca\/news_and_events.php (English)\">kanadickernas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>EAS sa s\u00e5 h\u00e4r:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEuropean astronomers follow with great concern<\/strong> the evolution of the situation of the JWST project, as they are convinced that its cancellation would cause severe damage to the advancement of astronomy worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JWST promises to be one of the world leading<\/strong> instruments for the coming decade in astronomy. Following on the achievements of the Hubble Space Telescope, it will focus on the many questions related to the origins of planets, stars and galaxies. It is expected to be unsurpassed in scope and capabilities. In addition, many major developments in world astronomy, like the ALMA array and the giant telescope E-ELT, are being designed and developed taking into account the\u00a0 expected capabilities of JWST. Together these instruments will bring mankind to the next step in the understanding of the Cosmos. JWST is an essential part of this development. The loss of JWST would therefore damage astronomy in a major way in the USA, in Europe and in the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/eas_logo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.astb.se\/cassiopeiabloggen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/eas_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many European astronomers and their funding agencies<\/strong>, together with colleagues in the USA and in Canada, have invested considerable resources and efforts in this project, in particular for the development of the MIRI and NIRSpec instruments.\u00a0 European astronomers within the instrument teams, and also very many others with no project involvement, have planned research programs for the coming years building on JWST capabilities, trusting that it will be launched as planned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It would be a tragedy if JWST ended up<\/strong> as unfinished space hardware in a museum, leaving generations of future young scientists to wonder what &#8220;might have been&#8221; had it flown in space. Astronomers are hopeful and confident that solutions can be found that will do justice to the efforts and funds\u00a0 already invested worldwide in the JWST project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The European Astronomical Society wishes to publicly express<\/strong> the concerns of its members about the current uncertainties affecting the development of the JWST mission.
