B\u00e5da teknikerna fungerar b\u00e4st f\u00f6r planeter som antingen \u00e4r massiva, ligger n\u00e4ra sina stj\u00e4rnor, eller b\u00e5dadera. D\u00e4rf\u00f6r missas m\u00e5nga planeter.<\/p>\n<p>Med gravitationell mikrolinsning\u00a0 man hitta planeter \u00f6ver ett brett spann i massa, inklusive s\u00e5dana som ligger l\u00e5ngt fr\u00e5n sina stj\u00e4rnor. Men det kr\u00e4vs ett mycket ovanligt geometriskt f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande mellan observat\u00f6r, bakgrundsstj\u00e4rna och linsstj\u00e4rna f\u00f6r att man ska kunna se mikrolinsningen \u00f6ver huvud taget. F\u00f6r att kunna se en planet under h\u00e4ndelsen m\u00e5ste dessutom \u00e4ven planetens bana vara orienterad p\u00e5 r\u00e4tt s\u00e4tt.<\/p>\n<p>Genom att kombinera samtliga m\u00e4tningar tyder resultaten starkt p\u00e5 att antalet planeter hos varje stj\u00e4rna \u00e4r i snitt st\u00f6rre en ett. Nyligen satt jag och skuml\u00e4ste hans <em>Studies of anagalactic nebulae<\/em> fr\u00e5n 1925, ett papper i vilket han diskuterar skillnaden mellan olika sorters novor typ den ljusstarka S And 1885 (som vi ju idag kallar en supernova) och de vanligare novorna. Lundmark skiljde p\u00e5 lower class-novor och upper class-novor\u00a0 och diskuterade \u00e4ven middle class-stj\u00e4rnsm\u00e4llar. S And hade enligt Lundmark en abs magn p\u00e5 -16<sup>m<\/sup>, vilket f\u00f6ranledde denna kommentar:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;Astronomers have told me several times that it is quite impossible that a star may reach such a magnitude as -16 corresponding to a luminosity of 300 million times the luminosity of our Sun. But do we know that the upper class Novae really consist of <em>one<\/em> star? Suppose that the Novae are caused by atomic processes and suppose that in a cluster of stars it happenas that the majority or a considerable number of the members flash up at the same time as Novae.
