Enligt studien b\u00f6r h\u00f6gst 100 000 ljussvaga satelliter svagare \u00e4n man kan se f\u00f6r blotta \u00f6gat kretsa kring jorden f\u00f6r att bevara m\u00f6jligheterna att observera natthimlen med moderna teleskop. Studien \u00e4r den f\u00f6rsta som tar h\u00e4nsyn till hur stora och ljusstarka satellitkonstellationer \u2013 som ocks\u00e5 har betydelse f\u00f6r h\u00e4lsa och milj\u00f6 \u2013 p\u00e5verkar astronomiska observationer genom att g\u00f6ra natthimlen ljusare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sedan 2019 har antalet satelliter <\/strong>som kretsar kring jorden \u00f6kat snabbt, till \u00f6ver 14 000 i dag&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/sweden\/news\/eso2607\/?nolang#1\">[1]<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 huvudsakligen SpaceX:s Starlink-telekommunikationssatelliter. Planer p\u00e5 nya satelliter har ocks\u00e5 eskalerat, b\u00e5de i antal och i potentiell p\u00e5verkan. &#8220;Hittills har vi lyckats, men det blir v\u00e4rre&#8221;, betonar Olivier Hainaut, som har varit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/announcements\/ann20022\/\">involverad i<\/a>&nbsp;att utveckla rekommendationer f\u00f6r att mildra satellitkonstellationers p\u00e5verkan p\u00e5 astronomin. Medan f\u00f6retag som SpaceX har vidtagit \u00e5tg\u00e4rder f\u00f6r att g\u00f6ra sina satelliter mindre ljusstarka, g\u00e5r nuvarande satellitplaner &#8220;bortom gr\u00e4nsen&#8221; f\u00f6r vad astronomin kan t\u00e5la, s\u00e4ger han. Tanken \u00e4r att b\u00f6rja med en prototypsatellit i omloppsbana i \u00e5r med m\u00e5let att n\u00e5 en satellitpopulation av 50 000 \u00e5r 2035. Dessa satelliter skulle bli de ljusaste n\u00e5gonsin i omloppsbana vilket skulle ge skadliga konsekvenser f\u00f6r m\u00f6rka himlar \u00f6ver hela jorden. Hainauts ber\u00e4kningar visar att hela konstellationen skulle fylla natthimlen med hundratals mycket starkt synliga satelliter. Sett inifr\u00e5n en reflekterad str\u00e5le skulle en av dessa satelliter vara fyra g\u00e5nger ljusare \u00e4n fullm\u00e5nen. \u00c4ven de satelliter som inte riktar sin str\u00e5le direkt mot observat\u00f6ren skulle bli lika ljusstark som planeten Venus, &#8220;morgonstj\u00e4rnan&#8221;. Fr\u00e5n en ljusf\u00f6rorenad stad, som M\u00fcnchen, Tyskland, skulle dessa satelliter vara de enda &#8220;stj\u00e4rnorna&#8221; som \u00e4r synliga p\u00e5 natthimlen och skulle r\u00e4knas i hundratal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dessa f\u00f6rslag, i kombination med andra<\/strong> som beaktats i den nya studien, skulle dramatiskt lysa upp natthimlen och hindra m\u00e4nsklighetens f\u00f6rm\u00e5ga att observera svaga kosmiska objekt, inklusive avl\u00e4gsna galaxer, vissa jordliknande planeter runt andra stj\u00e4rnor och till och med asteroider som potentiellt \u00e4r farliga f\u00f6r jorden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ljusa sp\u00e5r och ljusare himmel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hainaut f\u00f6rklarar<\/strong> att &#8220;satelliter, upplysta av solen, \u00e4r mycket ljusare \u00e4n avl\u00e4gsna galaxer. Om de bara \u00e4r n\u00e5got&nbsp; ljusstarkare skulle vissa instrument p\u00e5verkas \u00e4nnu mer: till exempel skulle kameran p\u00e5 US National Science Foundations Vera C. Rubin-observatorium riskera att f\u00f6rlora huvuddelen av bilder under perioder av flera timmar varje natt&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/sweden\/news\/eso2607\/?nolang#3\">[3]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hainauts simuleringar antog<\/strong> att ingen Reflect Orbital-satellit skulle rikta sin str\u00e5le direkt mot eller i n\u00e4rheten av ett astronomiskt observatorium. \u00c4nd\u00e5 skulle sp\u00e5ret fr\u00e5n en enda av dessa spegelsatelliter kunna f\u00f6rst\u00f6ra en observation med en kamera som den vid Rubin-observatoriet. Med hela flottan av Reflect Orbital-satelliter i omloppsbana samtliga bilder tagna med en kamera av detta slag g\u00e5 f\u00f6rlorade av de solbelysta satelliterna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Det \u00e4r dock inte bara satelliternas banor<\/strong> p\u00e5 himlen som begr\u00e4nsar vad vi kan observera: deras ljus kan f\u00f6rorena hela himlen. Satelliter som \u00e4r f\u00f6r svaga f\u00f6r att synas direkt producerar en sl\u00f6ja av diffust ljus, medan ljus fr\u00e5n ljusstarkare satelliter sprids i alla riktningar n\u00e4r det passerar genom atmosf\u00e4ren. B\u00e5da bidragen \u00f6kar natthimlens totala ljusstyrka. Denna studie \u00e4r den f\u00f6rsta d\u00e4r de astronomiska effekterna av satellitkonstellationernas bidrag till bakgrundshimmlens ljusstyrka beaktas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mycket ljusa satellitkonstellationer<\/strong> som Reflect Orbital skulle ha en s\u00e4rskilt allvarlig effekt p\u00e5 bakgrundshimmelens ljusstyrka. Med alla 50 000 Reflect Orbital-satelliter skulle himlens totala ljusstyrka vara upp till tre till fyra g\u00e5nger h\u00f6gre \u00e4n i dag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Begr\u00e4nsning av satelliter f\u00f6r att skydda himlen<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hainaut drar slutsatsen att<\/strong> de 1,7 miljoner nya satelliterna som f\u00f6resl\u00e5s skulle f\u00e5 drastiska konsekvenser f\u00f6r markbaserad astronomi. Dessa effekter kan bara undvikas genom att begr\u00e4nsa det totala antalet befintliga och framtida satelliter som \u00e4r tillr\u00e4ckligt svaga f\u00f6r att inte kunna ses med blotta \u00f6gat fr\u00e5n en m\u00f6rk plats till maximalt 100 000. &#8220;Detta \u00e4r inte en skarp siffra, som att 99 999 \u00e4r bra och 100 001 \u00e4r d\u00e5ligt: \u200b\u200bjag skulle helt klart f\u00f6redra 50 000&#8221;, s\u00e4ger Hainaut. &#8220;Men 100 000 orsakar f\u00f6rluster p\u00e5 ungef\u00e4r samma niv\u00e5 som andra tekniska f\u00f6rluster, s\u00e5som utrustningsfel.&#8221; Han till\u00e4gger dock att satelliterna m\u00e5ste vara svagare \u00e4n visuell magnitud 7&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/sweden\/news\/eso2607\/?nolang#4\">[4]<\/a>. Om n\u00e5gra av dem skulle vara ljusare \u00e4n minimitr\u00f6skeln f\u00f6r synlighet med blotta \u00f6gat&nbsp; skulle det maximala antalet satelliter beh\u00f6va vara mycket l\u00e4gre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SpaceX och Reflect Orbital, som \u00e4r ansvariga<\/strong> f\u00f6r de mest extrema nya f\u00f6rslagen, har b\u00e5da ans\u00f6kt om tillst\u00e5nd hos US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) f\u00f6r att skicka upp satellitkonstellationerna. Denna nya studie l\u00e5g till grund f\u00f6r ett svar fr\u00e5n ESO till FCC betr\u00e4ffande dessa f\u00f6rslag, i samarbete med Royal Astronomical Society i Storbritannien och International Astronomical Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;FCC fick \u00f6ver 1800 kommentarer<\/strong> ang\u00e5ende Reflect Orbital och n\u00e4stan 1500 kommentarer om SpaceX ans\u00f6kan&#8221;, f\u00f6rklarar Betty Kioko, ESO-ansvarig f\u00f6r internationella aff\u00e4rer och f\u00f6r att samordna ESO:s svar p\u00e5 f\u00f6rslagen. &#8220;Bollen ligger nu hos FCC, och vi inv\u00e4ntar nu besluten om b\u00e5da ans\u00f6kningarna. F\u00f6r optisk astronomi \u00e4r detta ett existentiellt hot, och vi hoppas att tillsynsmyndigheterna kommer att dela den uppfattningen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Astronomi genererar ett enormt v\u00e4rde <\/strong>f\u00f6r m\u00e4nskligheten, inklusive vetenskapligt, tekniskt, ekonomiskt och utbildningsm\u00e4ssigt, och hj\u00e4lper oss att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 v\u00e5r plats i universum&#8221;, s\u00e4ger ESO:s generaldirekt\u00f6r Xavier Barcons. \u201dDet stora antalet planerade satelliter i l\u00e5g omloppsbana runt jorden utmanar det bidraget, vilket understryker behovet av att begr\u00e4nsa framtida satellituppskjutningar och att astronomer, ingenj\u00f6rer, satellitoperat\u00f6rer och andra intressenter samarbetar f\u00f6r att anta strikta begr\u00e4nsnings\u00e5tg\u00e4rder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201dAtt skicka tusentals satelliter f\u00e5r konsekvenser:<\/strong> ekonomiska, ekologiska och astronomiska\u201d, till\u00e4gger Hainaut. Ljusf\u00f6roreningar fr\u00e5n mycket ljusa satellitkonstellationer kan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/apr\/05\/satellite-mirror-plans-could-disrupt-sleep-and-ecosystems-worldwide-scientists-say\">p\u00e5verka m\u00e4nniskors h\u00e4lsa och livsfunktioner<\/a>&nbsp;genom att st\u00f6ra biologiska klockor och ekosystem. Stora konstellationer har ocks\u00e5&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-89909-7\">direkta effekter p\u00e5 luftkvaliteten<\/a>&nbsp;fr\u00e5n de m\u00e5nga uppskjutningar som kr\u00e4vs f\u00f6r att skicka och underh\u00e5lla tusentals satelliter, samt fr\u00e5n de luftf\u00f6roreningar som orsakas n\u00e4r de brinner upp vid \u00e5terintr\u00e4det i atmosf\u00e4ren. \u201dMitt jobb \u00e4r astronomi, s\u00e5 jag kvantifierar effekterna p\u00e5 astronomin\u201d, f\u00f6rklarar Hainaut. \u201dJag hoppas att andra kommer att utv\u00e4rdera effekterna inom sina expertomr\u00e5den.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hainaut avslutar: \u201dL\u00e5g jordbana<\/strong> \u00e4r en himmelsk havsstrand som ger ett enormt v\u00e4rde till det moderna samh\u00e4llet, fr\u00e5n den global uppkopplingen till tillg\u00e5ngen till rymden.
